Day 445 Back To Basics and Jared, We've All Been There My Friend

Day 445

Back To Basics and Jared, We've All Been There My Friend

I'm seriously thinking I made a mistake in packing all of the cooking utensils, pots, and pans before we're totally out. I should have made those things the last to go. Actually, I did leave out a pan to make omelets, but I'm out of eggs. And really, there's no sense bringing groceries into the house now, I'd rather wait until we're moved in completely over the weekend, then we'll go to the store. I had a wonderful conversation with Courtney today, we'll call it a "planning session," and we're so excited about getting back into the groove of the basics. The basics of cooking at home and working out real good every single day. The basics. The basics are what brought us this far. We've kept it simple, making this road easy to follow for the rest of our lives. With a solid foundation of basics and the desire to learn more along the way, we can't lose my friend.

A listener of my radio show called me all excited this morning. They wanted to know if I had heard about Jared of Subway fame. Who hasn't? She then went on to excitedly explain that Jared has gained back a considerable amount of weight and she just saw the pictures on TV. I'm positive that this listener has never laid eyes on this blog, and I didn't mention the blog in our conversation. I didn't return the enthusiasm and quickly ended the call. Finding joy in others struggles isn't something I want to be a part of, it's just bad karma. Jared is human just like the rest of us. I really thought there was a good chance the pictures were doctored, but then I found out that Subway released an official statement in support of Jared, so it must be true.

This news really started me thinking about all of the times I lost and then gained it all back plus some. I started thinking of all of my friends and loved ones who have yo-yo'd too. It's a horrible feeling of being out of control as the pounds come back, it's sad, it's horrible...but it does happen when the mental aspects of this journey are ignored. If you simply go through the motions of eating less and exercising more, you'll lose weight. You can lose weight by any means you choose, but if the mental aspects are absent, ignoring the opportunity to change the way we treat food, approach food, lust after food, rely on food for emotional support---if these are not issues we confront. then it doesn't matter what we do to lose the weight, it's temporary. There just isn't a real substitute for honest mental change. I've talked with people that have had weight loss surgery and still gained weight back, one of them told me that they "learned to eat around it," whatever that means. Read Day 198 of this blog for my opinion on Jared's Subway approach. He did keep it off for so long, and he'll do it again. He's been a normal weight too long to go back now. I sincerely wish him the best. Not that he'll actually read this, but I honestly sympathize with your struggle Jared. We've all been there, right?

We're approaching the weekend and the busiest part of this move from one residence to another. I'll be so relieved come Sunday, because it will be over!! I didn't have a conventional workout tonight, just bending, lifting, carrying, and cleaning. It all added up to a tired boy at just after midnight.

By the way, I haven't increased my calories just yet. It's been suggested by many who have been there, that I increase my calories to jump up the metabolism a few notches. I understand this, and I will if I need to do it, no problem. I'm waiting to see the scale next Wednesday. Many others have reminded me that one bad weigh-in doesn't deserve the title of plateau, very true. I'll put that word back on the shelf and hope I get to leave it there!
Thank you for reading. Goodnight and...

Good Choices,
Sean

Here's a horrible before picture. I can't stand to look at this one...oh my. Courtney found it on her phone. The date on the file is from December of 2008...I'm not sure if that's the original date or not, because that would mean this picture was taken three months into this journey. Maybe so, but wow--it's so--quick, I must look away!

Current Picture, or as I like to call them, "in progress" shot inside the KPNC studio.
